Las Vegas, Baby! Formulis Moves To Las Vegas

by Michael Borowiecki on June 21, 2010

After almost eight years in Naperville, Illinois, I’ve decided to hang up our mittens and move from the cold Chicago winters to the bright, sunny, blue skies of Las Vegas, Nevada. Read the latest Formulis press release about our move and new Las Vegas office.

Formulis Las Vegas

Formulis packs up and leaves the Windy City for Sin City!

Now don’t get me wrong, I grew up in Naperville, went to college in the Midwest, and will always consider Chicago my hometown. Anyone that was raised on Portillo’s hotdogs, listened to Harry Caray announce the Cubs (sometimes arguably three sheets to the wind), enjoyed a chuckle at the expense of outsiders thinking Chicago is called the Windy City because of the cold wind that whips up off Lake Michigan, and appreciated Chicago’s wonderful, and underrated architecture… simply can’t help but remember Chicago fondly.

But Formulis needed a change – a change that would open new doors for us, yet enable us to retain our humble roots and Midwestern values. After looking into Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, California, Reno and Las Vegas… I chose to move Formulis to Las Vegas.

Las Vegas, What? Why Las Vegas?

As a marketer, I’m naturally drawn to the naked and unabashed display of capitalism and raw marketing. Las Vegas has distilled human emotion and desire into an expertly crafted marketing message. But beyond the marketing glamour of The Strip, Las Vegas is quiet, friendly, peaceful and very resort like. There’s plenty of great food, entertainment, and yes, even lot’s of outdoor activities, too! You can’t beat picturesque Red Rock and the surrounding mountains. But beyond the personal and kitschy reasons, Las Vegas just makes business sense.

Hard Times Can Be Good For Business

I won’t deny it. The Great Recession has been hard on Formulis and many of our small business clients. And for anyone that reads the news, Las Vegas is getting hammered too. Recent Las Vegas figures put unemployment at 14%, home foreclosures lead the nation, the two largest industries, casinos and construction are reeling, and education funding is dismal. But, there’s a lot to love about Las Vegas and a lot to gain from these hard times.

For a small business owner, such as myself, the upsides to Las Vegas’ misfortunes are numerous and compelling. Commercial rent is low, cost of living is low, housing prices are at record low levels, and employee wages are low. Couple these positives with Nevada’s zero personal and business income taxes, pro business climate, easy access to California, the Western U.S. and international Asian markets… what’s not to love!

Las Vegas is Las Vegas!

Lastly, Las Vegas holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Americans. Whether you love or loathe Las Vegas, people know of the place. To illustrate my point, twice when changing Formulis’ business address with my banks, after saying the new street address followed by Las Vegas, Nevada, I received the responses, “Oh, nice! Las Vegas!” and, “You lucky dog, you! Las Vegas is great!” I’ll let you know when I receive that same, emphatic response to Des Moines, Iowa (no offense to Des Moines).
