A lot of small business owners are caught up in the whir of evolving website technology and increasing media fragmentation. Wondering if the benefits of a website outweigh their fears of starting a website? A lot of small businesses aren’t even sure what makes a website successful. So, they rightfully question, do I need a small business website?
Get Started With A Small Business Website
Without a doubt, even a small “bare bones” website is a vital marketing tool. At the very least, you need to have a presence on the web so that customers, prospects, business partners, the business community and local organizations can quickly and easily find out more about your company. Get out and get started! If you don’t, you’re losing business to competitors that do. And if you already have a very basic small business website, start considering if it’s time for a website redesign.
A Basic Small Business Website Is Better Than No Website
Small starter sites are often called “brochure” type websites are not ideal, but it is much better to start small with a basic small business website and let your website evolve over time, than to not have one at all. Even if your site doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, you still need to have one as a resource and marketing tool. And with an increasing number of customers, you simply aren’t “real” to them until you have an established presence on the internet. So a simple website is much better than none at all.
Use The Web As A Marketing Tool
And on that note, even the most basic small business website needs to be approached with careful consideration as to your company’s overall marketing objectives and online branding. It is absolutely imperative that your website project a first-class professional image if you want to be taken seriously. With so many people researching other company’s online prior to making a purchase, your website may be the first chance you’ll have at making a favorable impression on a potential customer.
Compete Online
Another benefit of a website… the internet has literally leveled the playing field when it comes to competing against the big boys. With a well-designed website, even a sole proprietor with no employees can project the image and professionalism of a much larger business. This will help you more easily leverage your strengths against competing, and even more experienced businesses.
The only exception to this rule: it’s actually better to have no website at all than to have one that makes your business look bad. Your site speaks volumes about your company. It either says, “Hey, we care about our customers and we take our business seriously!” or it screams, “Hey, look, I let me neighbor’s kid design my site. Good luck finding anything of meaning on here!”
Your website is an important part of your business. Make sure you treat it as such!
